It is officially my birthday week!

As the clocks went forward and collectively we lost an hour, I regained an entire year.

I had managed to convince myself I was 34 already and about to turn 35... thankfully my loving husband is good at maths and could put me right!

I love my birthday and I absolutely love the wisdom I am receiving while I age.

This year has been absolutely fantastic in terms of where and how my music has been heard, and what stories my collaborators and I have told:

  • This Little Rose included in Trinity College London exam syllabus for Grade 8 Singing, and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 for International Women's Day

  • Insert Expletive Here, 2022, commissioned by East London Music Group - What does it feel like to experience and live with the threat of racism, especially when only the deaths of Black people move mountains? Dehumanised when alive. Martyred after death. When do we get to be human?

  • Lemon Verbena, an album with poet Jo Brandon, exploring the lives of mythical and legendary women who used various eccentricities to escape the confines of society and the patriarchy.

  • Girls Are Coming Out Of The Woods, poet Tishani Doshi, commissioned by Donne Women In Music, premiered at Royal Albert Hall, condemning male violence against women and girls - retribution is coming.

  • The Fell We Climb, Anti-Racist Cumbria. What is it like growing up Black in Cumbria?

Emotionally and professionally this year has been an exhausting one of fighting, healing and hibernating. Nevertheless, I have grown and changed beyond that which I thought possible.

On reflection, I am grateful for it all (while also flipping the finger at a few choice people)!

And for my last weekend as a 33 year old, I was fortunate to spend it in the company of three incredible women.

We laughed, walked, ate, drank, cackled with laughter, explored our experiences of racism, motherhood, sisterhood, politics, sex, joy, rage, sorrow.

It literally breathed life into my bones.

Here's to 34!
